Eyes Wide Shut

Sunlight hits my shut eyes. The insides look red. The heat, scorching. I feel a strange surface under me. It’s warm too, much warmer than my bed should be. It’s moving away as I touch it. What is happening? Where am I? Do I even dare to see where it is my dreams have taken me today? I slowly peek, too scared to even guess. I see a bright blinding light, too bright to make out. The world is white and yellow. I’m on sand. Where is this and which year is it. People walk by me as if they don’t even see, as if I’m in an invisible bubble. Follow them, I think, answer your own questions. That is the only way.

What are they wearing? I have never seen something like this before except maybe in a book. I follow them, they are going somewhere. They are walking in a line as if made to. They carry chisels and hammers. They have a task at hand. We reach a wall so high it’s apex was lost in the bright light. The walls have something on them. Pictures. In succession. Why are they there?
My vision goes blurry. What now? Familiar surroundings. I’m awake now. But what was that? What did I just see? A book lies next to me. A book about Egypt. Its cover has the same drawings I just saw. Signs and symbols of ancient Egypt read its cover.
